History of the city

The history of Blumenau still begin before the first settlers arrived in the valley of "Itajai". The whole region was inhabited by the indian tribes "kaigangs", "xoklengs" and "botocudos" , which revoltated for years against the "white" settlers and the progress of the settlement.

The german Pharmacist and philosopher Dr.Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau get 1850 from the province administration a piece of land assigned with the dimension of 10 km² and the order to build up a agriculturally colony with the european immigrants.

 At 2.September 1850 arrived the first 17 settlers and his families.This day is be valid as the oficial date of the foundation of Blumenau. According to the first immigrants, more and more europeans came, in chartered sailing boats ,over the Atlantic and therefore the number of farmers and craftsmen, which settled down at the banks of the flows, increased more and more.

At the beginning the colony was basically seen as private property of the city founder. However, this led to great problems in such a way, and was in 1860 this contract of the government auf remove.Dr. Blumenau remained in the administration of the colony, although she in 1880 into the district Blumenau changed.

 At the beginning beeing settled through Germans families, came however soon new immigration rivers of Italy and Pole which one itself mixed on with the Germans.
